2021 Kitchen Trend

We at Sinkology have been dreaming about the new year for months. You too? We thought so.

Now that 2021 is just a couple of weeks away, we can officially start planning for the new year. What better place to start than in the most-used room in your home? From coast to coast, country to country, we have all have been spending much more time in our kitchens than in recent years…even if it is just a place to gather carry-out items from your favorite restaurant.

Today, we share three of our favorite kitchen trends forecasted for 2021.

Eye-Catching Statements

The new year is going to be anything but drab. We all are ready for intriguing beauty that excites, rather than more of the same that bores. Trend forecasters are seeing big statements being made in the kitchen in many forms, from the sink to the backsplash behind it. There’s no one “right” way to make a statement. In fact, for 2021, it’s clear that there are as many styles as there are individuals. But where to make the statement? We say in the sink.

Crafted Stainless Steel Kitchen Sink with flowers in a vase on the countertop

If you know anything about us at Sinkology, you know we obsess over sinks. We know it’s the perfect place to add a functional statement that will make your time in the kitchen easier for everyday chores and on the eyes. From charming farmhouse sinks to copper, we have a wide selection so you can find a sink that suits.

If you already have a sink you love, now is the time to infuse fresh color into your monochromatic space. From quirky to sophisticated, color can say it all. Bring in vibrancy through an updated appliance or colorful cabinetry. If that’s not exactly in the budget right now but you want a more purposeful kitchen addition, bring on a beautiful backsplash. Skip the subway tiles and opt for a more unique mosaic design or stone.

We understand that a commitment to a standout shade can be a bit daunting. Many stick with neutrals, thinking they’ll tire of uncommon shades sooner than classic whites or earthy browns. 2021 says otherwise. A great first step in making a colorful statement is with a fresh coat of paint. Make an accent wall or shower every inch in a new color. For the biggest commitment-phones, try removable wallpaper.

Lower-Maintenance Countertops

Marble countertops flooded kitchens everywhere in 2020. But like the year itself, they’re only good in theory. Marble might be beautiful to look at, but they require a lot of money and everyday effort to maintain. In 2021, we expect kitchens to swap out needy materials for a more family-friendly alternative like quartz. Quartz can give you the same look as marble with extra durability for whatever your household might throw at it.

Crafted Stainless Steel Kitchen Sink with flowers in a vase on the countertop

For more natural kitchens, trade out butcher blocks with an FSC-certified wood, bamboo or reclaimed wood. The inviting look brings so much sturdy beauty to the kitchen without negatively impacting the environment. This brings us to our third and final top kitchen trend for 2021.

Sustainable, Energy-Efficient Kitchens

Over the recent years, there’s been a clear shift toward sustainable alternatives, especially in 2020. At times, it can seem like small changes won’t make a difference. But individuals have the opportunity to make an impact that lasts in their own homes. More and more household products continue to come to market year after year, providing more earth-conscious kitchen convenience. 2021 is expected to bring even more.

Crafted Stainless Steel Kitchen Sink with flowers in a vase on the countertop

You might already be thinking your dated refrigerator needs to be traded out for a modern alternative, but you might be surprised at the energy-saving solutions that come with other appliances. We’re seeing stoves that require little to no preheating and dishwashers that use less water with every wash. These one-time purchases that last will continue to make an impact with every use.

With all the extra time we’ve all spent in the kitchen in 2020, it’s clear that an upgrade will be well worth it. Go ahead, try (at least) one of these top three trends for 2021. You – and your kitchen – deserve it.

(Safely) Home for the Holidays

santa decoration wearing a mask.

The holidays are right around the corner and soon enough families across the country will be opening up their homes to house guests for the first time in months. While we couldn’t be more excited at the thought of welcoming others outside of our “pod” for an overnight stay, we wanted to make that sure you, our Sinkology family, is well-prepared to safely welcome visitors. We would love to dive right into the fun stuff, but we have to put safety first.

According to the CDC, homeowners should take the following steps to prepare their homes for a safe visit.

  • Limit the number of guests you invite.
  • Prepare your space for outdoor gathering or a more spacious indoor setting.
  • Clean and disinfect your home thoroughly before guests’ arrival and throughout their stay. Follow the CDC’s top cleaning tips here.
  • Prepare or order food that can be served individually, rather than potluck style.
  • Increase ventilation of your home by opening windows and doors, weather permitting. If the weather makes this step impossible, set central air and heating on continuous circulation.
  • Keep your local mandates and safety recommendations in mind when preparing for your visitors.

Once your guests arrive, the CDC recommends that you kindly request they do the following as soon as they arrive:

  • Wash all clothing and masks.
  • Stow luggage away.
  • Wash hands thoroughly with soap and water for at least 20 seconds.

Throughout their stay, the CDC recommends congregating outdoors as much as possible and maintaining proper social distance and continuing to wear masks. Make sure your guests are aware of all CDC travel recommendations. You can direct them to their website here.

Family wearing masks while holding gifts

We at Sinkology plan to quarantine the 2 weeks leading up to our holiday travels and get tested for COVID-19 before driving to our loved ones. We hope you do the same too, whether you’re the host with the most or eager visitor.

If you’re hosting, have fun with the rest of the prep work. This is your chance to create a vacation-like experience for your guests, which will be a much-needed treat for all.

First, as you make space for safe congregating, make sure there is plenty of space for guests to store their things. As we mentioned earlier, it’s a good idea to keep their suitcases out of common areas. Provide some sort of bench for them to easily and safely access all of their packed goodies. For the most homey feel, clear out drawers or closet space so they can completely store their suitcases and feel right at home with easy access to everything they brought with them.

Once you’ve made space, create a hotel feel with thoughtful touches throughout the home. If guests are staying overnight, take the time to lay out a set of towels, complete with a set of wash cloths. Keep plenty of travel-size toiletries on hand for the cleanest, resort-worthy setup. No matter how long your guests plan to stay, whether overnight or just a day trip, set out hand sanitizer in all high-traffic areas and paper towels to keep everyone easily clean.

Celebrating holidays through zoom call

Preparing to welcome others home for the holidays might look a little different this year, but we have a feeling that it will feel even more special than all other years combined. Have a safe and happy holiday visit, everyone!

Gingerbread Chocolate Chip Cookies

Sinkology is proud to present Emily Schuermann, our food-loving guest blogger who runs Food for a Year. Emily is here to share some recipes she has created exclusively for the Sinkology blog that reflect her view of a copper sink: simple, timeless, affordable, and beautifully rustic.
______________________________________________________________________________

I just love this Gingerbread Chocolate Chip Cookie recipe! It’s the perfect blend between warm seasonal spices and homey chocolate chip cookie perfection. Plus it’s a breeze to make. With that resume, I think it’s pretty clear – you must make these ASAP!

I’ve made a version of these chewy ginger cookies for years and years – but this year, I decided to experiment by tweaking the ingredients to resemble chocolate chip cookies.

ingredients

browned butter

It’s all about the BUTTER

This Gingerbread Chocolate Chip Cookie recipe is one of those 1-2-3 recipes that comes together in about 10 minutes. But there are TWO steps the deserve a little extra attention ::

  1. browning the butter
  2. creaming the butter with the sugars (BEFORE adding the eggs)

Browned butter is a made by melting the butter over medium flame to the point that the milk solids in the butter turn a nutty brown color.

Although it’s not a difficult task, it does require paying attention (it can burn in a flash if you’re not watching).

Once the butter is browned, place it in a heat safe dish and allow it to cool completely before combining it with the sugars.

Gingerbread Chocolate Chip Cookies – as easy as 1…2…3

1. Cream the sugars and butter together until the mixture is fluffy (1 minute).

2. Then beat in the eggs and molasses.

3. Mix in the dry ingredients

creaming butter sugar

Although I prefer a GIANT-sized cookie (approximately 1/4 cup of dough), these cookies are wonderful whether mini-sized or gigantic!

cookies on a sheet pan

I love how beautiful these baked cookies look when they’ve been rolled in coarse sugar – and the crunchy, sugary exterior is so festive, don’t you think?!

But truly the very best part of these cookies is that whisper of nutty browned butter combined with those giant chunks of dark chocolate chips in contrast to the classic gingerbread spices. Y-U-M-M-Y!! I think this will be my signature holiday cookie!

Gingerbread Chocolate Chip Cookies

  • 4 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 4 teaspoons ground ginger
  • 1 teaspoon ground cloves
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons ground cinnamon
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 2 teaspoons baking soda
  • 1-1/2 cups  salted butter, (melted, browned and cooled)**
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 cup dark brown sugar
  • 2 eggs, room temperature
  • 1/2 cup molasses
  • 3/4 cup coarse sugar or granulated sugar

Preheat oven to 350°.

In a medium mixing bowl stir together flour, ginger, cloves, cinnamon, salt and baking soda; set aside.

In the  mixing bowl of a stand mixer, beat cooled, browned butter** on low speed for 30 seconds.

While continuing on low speed, gradually add the granulated and dark brown sugar to the browned butter.

Beat until combined, scraping sides of bowl occasionally.

Add eggs and molasses and beat to combine.

Switch to a paddle attachment or use a wooden spoon for the remainder of the recipe.

Incorporate the flour mixture incrementally; 1/2 at a time.

Shape dough into approximate 1/4 cup balls.

Roll in the coarse or granulated sugar.

Place rolled dough balls (about 2-1/2″ apart) on a parchment-lined cookie sheet.

Bake for 15 minutes or until cookies are light brown and puffed.*

Cool on cookie sheet for 2 minutes before transferring to a wire rack to cool completely.

Store in an air-tight container 3 days or freeze for up to 3 months.

Makes 24

*(Do not over bake or cookies will not be chewy.)

**to brown butter, place sticks in a medium saucepan over medium flame. Stir regularly while the butter melts. Once the butter begins to froth, it is nearing the browning stage so keep a close eye. When the melted butter turns a medium golden brown (as pictured above), remove from the flame and pour into a heat-proof bowl to cool to room temperature.

The Lazy Homeowner’s Guide to a Kitchen Refresh

Kitchen with copper sink and marble countertops

It’s finally fall, the season of sweater weather, sports, and school activities. Of course, all of these look a bit different this year as we continue to adapt to living with COVID-19. One thing that you might wish would look a little different this year is your kitchen. We’ve said it before, but we keep finding more and more things we’d like to improve in our homes, especially when we’re spending more hours at home than years past.

You may be like us: creating list after list of home renovation dreams. But, who are we kidding? We don’t actually want to take the time and energy to do a complete do-it-yourself kitchen project. We’re just ready to enjoy a new kitchen.

Here’s the thing, you don’t have to do it all to get everything you want out of your new kitchen. The simplest way to refresh without a total overhaul? A DIY-friendly drop-in sink and a fresh coat of paint.

Yes, it really can be that simple.

matte white drop-in fireclay sink

We recommend starting with the cabinets. Yes, painting cabinets can be a messy job, but follow these five tips and you’ll easily modernize your kitchen:

Protect your existing countertops, backsplash, and floor with inexpensive rosin or brown builder’s paper.

Remove doors, drawer fronts, and handles. Expert tip: remove all doors and drawers so you don’t risk mixing up which goes where when you reinstall. It seems time consuming, but trust us on this one: it will save you time in the long run.

Sand your cabinets…within reason. Yes, it’s a good idea to sand cabinets before painting, but don’t go down to the bare wood. A simple light sanding will make sure your paint adheres to your cabinets. Be sure to vacuum away any sanding dust. Note: repeat this step between each coat of paint.

Whether you use a mini roller or a traditional paint brush, paint evenly by following the wood grain and wiping away any excess from the edges of cabinet doors. Novice painters will feel like pro’s using an eggshell or satin sheen paint, which de-emphasize imperfections.

If all else fails, consider spray-painting doors. It goes without saying that this is best done outside.

Once your cabinets have gotten a facelift, it’s time to install the star of the show: your new kitchen sink. Yes, you can get the high-end, professionally installed look with our drop-in sinks. We’ve rounded up three of our favorite easy-to-install options:

Jackson

The Sinkology Jackson Drop-In Fireclay Kitchen Sink is one of our most versatile sinks that will suit almost any kitchen. We especially love seeing it in all-white kitchens complete with marble countertops.

45 degree view of angelico drop-in copper kitchen sink

For those looking to make more of an impact, copper is the way to go. The Angelico Drop-In Copper Sink comes complete with faucet holes, positioned either on the left or right side, for the easiest user-friendly install that looks like a million bucks.

Even farmhouse style-loving homeowners can enjoy an easy upgrade with the Sinkology Josephine QuickFit Drop-In Farmhouse Kitchen Sink. We really love it in the neutral, transitional matte black. Click here. You’ll see why.

With these tips, even the laziest among us can enjoy a “new” kitchen. When you finish your kitchen project, snap a pic and share it with us on Instagram @Sinkology. We can’t wait to see the transformation!

Mini Spiced Vanilla Cream Pies

Sinkology is proud to present Emily Schuermann, our food-loving guest blogger who runs Food for a Year. Emily is here to share some recipes she has created exclusively for the Sinkology blog that reflect her view of a copper sink: simple, timeless, affordable, and beautifully rustic.
______________________________________________________________________________

One of my goals with the recipes I create here on the Sinkology blog is to share simple recipes that have a big impact at your dinner table. Truthfully, instant and pre-made certainly have their place in the kitchen but sometimes you just need a little something special. Homemade cream pie is one of those recipes that requires a few special steps – but with that first bite you’ll realize, those extra minutes were so very worth it!

Yes, there are a few more steps required to prepare a homemade cream pie filling – but the technique is simple and the process is surprisingly speedy.

I’ve broken the process down into to categories – crust and filling.

Graham Cracker Crust

butter + crust ingredients melted butter + crust ingredients and jars

mixing crust ingredients placing graham cracker crust in jars

This graham cracker crust is the easiest thing ever! Simply buy boxed graham cracker crumbs, combine them with melted butter, a pinch of salt and some sugar and then press the crust mixture into the bottom of each jar.

I like to bake the crust-filled jars at 350° for 10 minutes so that the crust forms a crisp shell to hold the cream pie filling.

Spiced Vanilla Cream Pie Filling

cream pie filling ingredients

cream pie simmering stove top egg yolks + half filling filling + egg continued on stovetop vanilla + butter in filling

Preparing the spiced vanilla cream pie filling is where a few important techniques come into play. But these really are a few basic kitchen skills that are handy to be familiar with.

First, prepare the crust, fill the mini pie jars and bake them. The crusts should cooling when you begin making the cream pie filling

Next, measure everything out and separate the egg yolks:

  • milk
  • cornstarch
  • spices
  • sugar + salt
  • egg yolks
  • vanilla
  • butter

Last, set out the tools you’ll need:

  • a medium saucepan
  • a strainer (see pictures)
  • a whisk
  • place whisked egg yolks in a medium sized heat-proof bowl

Now you’re ready for the speedy process of making homemade pie filling. Start by combining the cornstarch, sugar and milk in a medium saucepan. Add the spices and place the saucepan over medium/medium-low flame and stir continuously.

Once the filling has thickened and boiled for 1 minute, pour half into the whisked eggs. It’s important to stir the egg mixture continuously during this process.

Return the egg mixture to the saucepan, and boil the filling for one minute while continuously stirring.

All that’s left is to strain the mixture and then fill the mini pie crusts.

Fill + Chill + Serve

Chill and serve with a dollop of sweetened whipped cream and a sprinkle of ground cinnamon.

filled cream pie jars

I love this dessert for so many reasons.

First, it’s easier to make than it sounds – so that’s a relief! Second, it’s so, so much better than instant pie filling. Third, the spiced flavors are so perfect – just the right amount to taste festive and warm without overpowering the vanilla. And last, I love that this dessert can be made ahead and served as pre-portioned mini pies.

Mini Spiced Vanilla Cream Pies

You’ll need 6-8 4 oz (1/4 pint) jars for this mini pie recipe or an 8 oz pie pan.

Cream Pie Filling

  • 3 T cornstarch
  • 2 c milk (whole milk)
  • 1/4 t sea salt
  • 2 cinnamon sticks
  • 10 whole cloves
  • 7 allspice berries
  • (1) 2″ piece of candied ginger
  • 3 egg yolks, whisked
  • 1 T butter, salted
  • 2 t vanilla
  • grated cinnamon stick or ground cinnamon for garnish
  • sweetened whipped cream topping, optional

Graham Cracker Crust

  • 2 c graham cracker crumbs
  • 3/4 c sugar
  • 1/4 t sea salt
  • 6 T melted butter, salted

Heat the oven to 350°. Combine crust ingredients in a medium mixing bowl and press approximately 2 T of the mixture into each jar, being sure to cover the bottom of each jar moving up the sides.

Place the crust-filled jars on a rimmed baking sheet and bake for 10 minutes.

While the crusts are baking, begin preparing the cream pie filling. Place cornstarch, milk, salt, sugar and spices into a medium saucepan whisking to combine. Over medium/medium-low flame* stir constantly until the mixture thickens and boils. Boil while stirring for 1 minute.

Place whisked egg yolks into a medium-sized heat proof mixing bowl. Gradually pour half of the hot mixture into the whisked yolks while stirring the egg yolk mixture continuously. Blend the egg yolk, cream pie filling mixture back into the filling in the saucepan and return to medium/medium-low flame.

Boil for 1 minute, remove from the heat and stir in the butter and vanilla.

Place the strainer over a large heat-proof mixing bowl and then pour the spiced vanilla cream pie filling into the strainer. This will strain out the spices and remove the lumps.

Pour the warm filling into the prepared graham cracker crust filled jars leaving about 1/2″ from the top of each jar.

Cover with the lid and ring and refrigerate for up to 48 hours before serving.

Serve with sweetened whipped cream and a sprinkle of grated cinnamon stick.

*depending on your stove, you may need to increase the heat to medium. The mixture can scald quickly so keep a close eye, stirring continuously and reduce heat if necessary.

Vessel Sinks Forever

copper-vessel-sink

To vessel, or not to vessel…that seems to be the most highly contested question that’s on every bathroom renovator’s mind. Some say vessel sinks are the only way to go, while others avoid them at all cost. As for those of us at Sinkology, the answer is clear: the vessel sink is here to stay. Today, we’ll share three of our favorite features that only vessel sinks can provide.

Vessel Sinks Bring Artistry to the Ordinary

We love how a vessel sink sits atop the countertop or ever so slightly recessed, creating a functional piece of art that you can’t help but admire. From clean-lined contemporary styles to classic, elegantly curved shapes, vessel sinks’ structure can be suited for all types of bathroom design styles.

With this sort of installation, vessel sinks have more surface area in view, which provides the perfect opportunity to show off your favorite material, like hammered nickel or natural copper, in a variety of intriguing shapes. No undermount or drop-in sink can bring the same beauty to a bathroom space.

Not only do vessel sinks double the visible surface area of the basin, they also clear up coveted countertop space. This is especially helpful in small powder rooms or shared bathrooms where space is limited.

copper-vessel-bath-sink-waterfall-countertop

Vessel Sinks are the Original Sink Style

Of course, we understand that not everyone may be drawn to vessel sink’s shape at first sight. It’s anything but ordinary, which can be off-putting for some. But just because vessel sinks aren’t typical doesn’t mean they’re a short-lived trend only suited for some. In fact, no one can deny they’ve withstood the test of time. Our second favorite feature of vessel sinks is their classic beauty.

Think about it: a vessel sink is the original bathroom sink shape. Back in a time when fully recessed sinks weren’t even a possibility, vessel sinks helped our ancestors wash up with ease. Now, this isn’t to say that vessel sinks are ancient history. Quite the contrary. Today, we have beautiful modern variations that act as a true statement piece in the bathroom. Many say that vessel sinks should stay in decades past, but we at Sinkology love the nostalgic nod to the original wash basin.

copper-eddington-vessel-sink

Vessel Sinks Go with the Flow

This benefit may seem obvious at first glance. There’s something so beautiful about water flowing from a faucet into a vessel sink, especially when it’s wall-mounted. In addition to everyday, easygoing flow they provide, vessel sinks can be easily swapped out to suit your style.

Since vessel sinks sit on top of the counter, any novice installer can get the job done easily. This allows you to transform your bathroom from traditional to modern, classic to bold, whenever you’d like. Whether you swap your sink seasonally or just when you’re looking for a simple refresh, the easy-to-install quality is perfect for those looking for an improvement without having to make a total bathroom renovation.

This isn’t to say you’ll have to replace your sink every so often. After all, Sinkology sinks are made with only the finest, sturdiest materials that create a statement that truly stays. We just love having the option to easily upgrade without having to call in the professionals.

No matter if you love them or could do without them, vessel sinks make an impact. Shop our complete line of vessel sinks here.

Our Fall Favorites: Bathroom Edition

Now that it’s October, you might be embracing autumn in your day-to-day life with pumpkin spice everything, cozy cable knit sweaters, and evening bonfires. But what about your bathroom décor? If it’s still stuck in summer, keep reading. This post will inspire you to incorporate some of our fall favorites into your bathrooms, from half baths to master suites.

We at Sinkology love all things fall and firmly believe that seasonal celebrations shouldn’t stop at the bathroom door. Now, we’re not saying that you need to fill every inch of your bathroom with fall elements. It’s quite the opposite, really. Frankly, there isn’t space for festive hay bales or spooky jack-o-lanterns in the average bathroom.

We recommend you only bring in seasonal décor that will bring a smile to your face, not annoyances to your bathroom visit. Skip the unnecessary clutter that will just slow you down in your already hurried morning routine.

…Yes, this is even recommended for those of you with a short commute traveling to your downstairs home office. No one wants to add so much seasonal stuff that it interferes with everyday life. Instead, you want to bring seasonality in conveniently.

One of the easiest, most impactful additions actually takes up the least amount of space: an air freshener. We love how air fresheners fill the room with a fall-perfect feel, without adding visible clutter. Whether a simple outlet plug like a Bath & Body Works wallflower, a soothing all-natural essential oil diffuser, or cozy candle, this is one of our favorite ways to set a fall vibe indoors. Not sure what fragrance is best for fall? Our favorite candle and wallflower fragrances include pumpkin spice (obviously), sweet apple cider, and earthy cedar. For essential oils, we’re all about natural cinnamon bark, bergamot, and clove.

We understand if some of you are less than enthused about adding fragrance to an impeccably clean bathroom. But, you can still bring in a natural fall essence with seasonal plants. From tall grasses and dried flower bouquets to branches filled with colorful leaves, there are plenty of ways to incorporate seasonal nature indoors. Opt for tall, thin vases on your countertop corners or along wall shelves. We even love trading out decorative stones, pearls, and gems in glass jars for acorns, buckeyes, and pine cones in mason jars. Just be sure to be intentional with these natural elements…and promise to not go overboard.

If the thought of adding an extra anything to your bathroom immediately gives you claustrophobia, simply replace your favorite fabrics with a more fall shade. You’ll love the transition from a beautiful, summery blue rug to rich red bath mat, crisp white towels to earthy brown alternatives, or a springy floral shower curtain to one filled with golden yellow sunflowers.

Yes, fall is a beautiful, colorful time. But, we get it if you’d prefer to stick with the neutrals. There’s really nothing better than keeping a white-and-gray theme all autumn long with a small collection of white pumpkins, distressed wood frames, and cotton branches.

These are some of our fall favorites for bathroom design. Now, we want to know: how do you bring all the fall feels to your bathroom? Share your seasonal favorites with us on Instagram @Sinkology with #FallFavorites.

How To: Bring Fall Charm to your Kitchen

Autumn is officially upon us. Some of you might be exclaiming “finally” while others are already missing summer. We believe that every season is a reason to celebrate, no matter what the weather is like outside. It gives us the opportunity to spruce up our spaces, including our favorite room in the home: the kitchen.

Yes, seasonal décor *can* be tacky at times. But you don’t have to stick with overly obvious Thanksgiving-themed towels, trick-or-treat signs, or overdone autumnal color palate. We believe that, when done right, fall décor can bring a special seasonal vibe. No matter if you’re a pumpkin spice fan, love cozy sweater evenings, or just like a change of pace in your space, here are a few ways to add charming fall touches to your kitchen:

Like we’ve shared in previous posts, all-white kitchens are currently beloved in homes all over the country. But don’t think that you have to take away from that crisp minimalistic look just to bring in a touch of fall. If you want to keep your all-white kitchen consistent, bring in beautiful white pumpkins and fresh eucalyptus. Together, there is a touch of texture with just a nod to fall, without overdoing it.

If you’re open to a bit of color, burnt orange is a great place to start. Whether through a gathering of leaves sitting atop your cabinets or in potted mums surrounding your bay window, there’s nothing more fall that an orange hue. Of course, if orange is the opposite of your aesthetic, try rich reds instead. When used in table runners, place mats, and even stovetop pots, you and your entire family will be ready for cozy evenings in.

No matter your color preference, fall florals add a beautiful change to standard blooms. In addition to vibrant mums, we love bringing in a blend of wispy grain stalks and dried flowers to dining room tables, wall planters, and wreaths.

Of course, you don’t necessarily have to add clutter just to create a fall feel in your kitchen. Even the most functionality focused people can bring in a touch of fall to the kitchen. It’s all about featuring the most autumnal things that you’re already using day to day. One of our favorite ways to do this is in a countertop fruit basket. Trade out juicy limes and lemons for farm-fresh apples in your kitchen island’s fruit basket. If you have a multi-tier basket, take the top-most shelf for mini gourds. If you tend to keep sweets in stock, this is a perfect chance to feature pumpkin pie on your dessert stand or swap out your standard cookie jar for a pumpkin-shaped alternative.

Not only can you show off only your most-used fall foods, trading out materials will help you mentally shift away from summer to cooler fall nights. One way to do this is by replacing any crisp white canisters you keep on your countertop for copper. This natural metal will bring the shades of the season indoors, beautifully.

How will you bring in the season of change into your kitchen? We’d love to be inspired by your favorite fall décor. Share with us on Instagram @Sinkology with #FallFavorites.

Hominy Gratin

Sinkology is proud to present Emily Schuermann, our food-loving guest blogger who runs Food for a Year. Emily is here to share some recipes she has created exclusively for the Sinkology blog that reflect her view of a copper sink: simple, timeless, affordable, and beautifully rustic.

If you’ve been following along with me for these past few years, then you’ll know sides are my favorite part of the holiday meal. There’s something about a side dish that takes comfort food to a whole other level and this hominy gratin does just that!

all hominy gratin ingredients

What is Hominy?

Hominy is made from whole corn kernels that have been soaked in solution to soften the outer hull. Once the hull is removed, the kernel puffs and the texture becomes more tender and chewy than a typical corn kernel, similar to a cooked pinto bean.

Hominy is a hearty vegetable that can hold up to extended cooking time, making it a perfect addition to soups, stews and casseroles (like this Hominy Gratin).

Two Stars in this Dish ::

There are really two main steps to this simple side dish:

  • the cheesy sauce
  • the crunchy topping

The Sauce ::

For this sauce, I’ve chosen to combine two of my favorite cheeses : sharp cheddar and pepper jack. These cheeses add just the right amount of tang and spice to partner with the hominy. For some extra flavor, I’ve added one bay leaf and a teaspoon of dijon mustard.

Start by melting the butter into the flour, adding the bay leaf, dijon and salt + pepper. Once the butter melts and creates a paste, stir in milk, cream and cheeses. Continue to stir until cheese is melted. Taste and adjust seasoning if needed.

Then pour the cheese (mornay) sauce over the hominy and diced peppers.

The Topping ::

The topping is the easiest step – just combine the topping ingredients

  • panko
  • melted butter
  • salt + pepper
  • 1 oz of each cheese

and sprinkle over the hominy and sauce.

Bake the hominy gratin in a 400° oven for 10 minutes and then reduce the temperature to 350° continuing to bake for 20 minutes until the top is crisp and the cheese is melted and golden.

Such a simple side, with so much flavor. That classic, sweet flavor of hominy combine with the slightly spicy cheesy sauce and topped with crisp breadcrumbs is certain to be the perfect partner to your Thanksgiving turkey!

Hominy Gratin

  • 2 cans hominy, drained (I used white hominy + yellow hominy)
  • 3 T red sweet pepper, finely diced

Mornay Sauce Filling

  • 3 1/2 T butter, salted
  • 2 T flour
  • 1 t dijon mustard
  • 1/4 t sea salt
  • 1/8 t black pepper
  • 1 bay leaf
  • 1 c whole milk
  • 1/2 c heavy whipping cream
  • 6 oz grated sharp cheddar, reserving 1 oz for garnish
  • 2 oz grated pepper jack cheese, reserving 1 oz for garnish

Bread Crumb Topping

  • 1 1/2 c panko breadcrumbs
  • 1/4 t sea salt
  • 1/8 t black pepper
  • 2 T melted butter, salted

Preheat over to 400°. Prepare a 10″x7.5″x2″ baking dish by spraying with nonstick cooking spray.

Place drained hominy and diced sweet peppers in the prepared dish, spreading evenly.

In a medium saucepan, combine first 6 filling ingredients, melting the butter into the flour to create a paste.

Add milk, cream and cheeses (reserving 1 oz of each to use as garnish).

Whisk to combine until cheese melts and the sauce thickens. Taste to adjust seasoning of necessary.

Pour the cheese sauce over the hominy and peppers.

In a medium bowl, combine topping ingredients. Sprinkle over the cheesy hominy, top with remaining grated cheese and place into the preheated oven.

Bake for 10 minutes at 400° and then reduce the temperature to 350°, continuing to bake for 20 minutes until topping is crisp and cheese is melted and golden on top.

Serve immediately.

Small Batch Fall-Spiced Granola

Sinkology is proud to present Emily Schuermann, our food-loving guest blogger who runs Food for a Year. Emily is here to share some recipes she has created exclusively for the Sinkology blog that reflect her view of a copper sink: simple, timeless, affordable, and beautifully rustic.

As the temperatures start to drop, I really start to crave those warm flavors of allspice, cinnamon, ginger and clove. This fall-inspired small batch granola is the perfect way to incorporate those flavors into your day!

Easily Adaptable Go-To Granola Recipe

I love the basic framework for this granola recipe! It’s so versatile and can be modified and adapted to what you have on hand and what you’re currently craving. For this “Fall-inspired” granola, I used a combination of crushed, toasted hazelnuts and sprouted pumpkin seeds but you can use almonds, walnuts, pecans or any nut you prefer.

Next, I used a store-bought, pre-blended medley of dried fruit that contained all the beautiful colors of Fall including peaches, apples, apricots, raisins and pears. ((I think cranberries, cherries, plums and dates would also be some great dried-fruit options!))

Last, I boosted the flavors with a teaspoon of grated orange zest and a pre-mixed blend of warm spices (I added a little more ginger and cinnamon to get the flavors right where I wanted them).

I love the combination of these flavors, every bite is a little different thanks to the bits of dried fruit + hazelnuts + sprouted pumpkin seeds. But my favorite part?? The blend of warm spices and orange. It’s so delicious and addictive. I’m enjoying this granola all day long – on yogurt, on ice-cream and by the handfuls!

And – bonus! This recipe makes just enough to enjoy all week long!

Small Batch Fall-Spiced Granola

  • 1/3 c honey
  • 1/2 c brown sugar
  • 1/3 c pure maple sirup
  • 4 c quick oats
  • 1 T Fall spice blend*
  • 1 t orange zest
  • 1/2 t sea salt
  • 1 1/2 c dried fruit, chopped (fall medley if available)
  • 1 1/2 c chopped nuts, chopped + toasted (I used hazelnuts)
  • 1/2 c sprouted pumpkin seeds (or sunflower seeds)
  • 4 t cooking oil (for coating baking sheet pans)

Preheat oven to 350°. Prepare (2) 1/2 sheet or 1/4 sheet pans by coating each with oil.

In a large mixing bowl, combine first 7 ingredients. Mix well to coat oats evenly with the sugars and spices.

Spread oat mixture evenly onto both baking sheets in a single layer with space between clumps for air circulation.

Bake for 25-30 minutes, stirring every 10 minutes. Once oats become toasted in color (medium golden) remove from oven.

Immediately place granola in a large mixing bowl and toss with nuts and dried fruit. Allow to cool, then stir to break up large clusters.

Once completely cooled, store in an air-tight container for 2 weeks or freeze for up to 3 months.

Makes 6 cups.

*(2 t apple pie spice or pumpkin pie spice + 1 t ground cinnamon + 1/4 t ground ginger)
