How to Clean & Care for a Copper Sink

Sinkology is proud to present Yvette, an Emmy-Winning producer & writer from Muy Bueno Cookbook.
Follow along as she shares a few tips & tricks on how to care for your beautiful copper sink.

Gorgeous Copper Sink

I have always had a thing for copper and admired copper sinks, but I never knew if a copper sink was really in the cards for me. After obsessing and drooling over copper sinks on Instagram I finally decided to reach out to Sinkology and inquire about one, and learn more about cleaning and caring for a copper sink.

I recently collaborated with Home Depot on a video: How to make Garbage Disposal Refreshers and Sinkology was thrilled to partner, so together we not only showcased an upgraded Moen garbage disposal, a Moen motion sense oil-rubbed bronze faucet, but also a spanking new gorgeous hammered copper sink by Sinkology.

Organized Home: Favorite Kitchen Organization Finds (KonMari Style!)

‘Tis the season for KonMari cleaning, right?  After a busy fall and fast holiday season, I feel like my entire house could use a good cleaning and organizing spree.  I’ve been trying to tackle various areas of my home over the last couple of weeks, but I have to admit…I’ve been spending extra time in the kitchen.  Why?  Because there are so many cool and amazingly genius products out there to get your kitchen organized and whipped into shape!

I’m thinking I might not be the only person on a cleaning/organizing quest this time of year, so I thought I’d share a few of my favorite kitchen organization tools.  I included some fun stuff that will help you corral clutter everywhere from the kitchen sink to the cabinets and countertops!

Get a Sidekick for Dish Duty

sinkology sidekick

I’m leading off with something I’ve had for the last two years that has become a must-have item in my kitchen — Sinkology’s Sidekick sponge assistant. This ingenious product uses a heavy-duty magnet to attach a sponge holder to the **inside** of your sink.  It stays out of sight and keeps your sponge off the countertop or the bottom of your sink, where it can collect bacteria.  Whether you have a copper sink or not, this product is a lifesaver when it comes to easily storing your sink sponge within reach.

Tame the Jungle of Cords

Native Union Eclipse Charger

How many devices do you have charging on your kitchen counter top?  We’ve always got at least 2 or 3 things charging and the cords drive. me. insane.  They’re always tangled up with one another and they seem to expand to about 4 miles long, taking up alllll the counter space.  I’ve tried several things to tame the cords, but they were always bulky or less than stylish looking.  As I was searching for a way to nix this problem, I found Native Union’s Eclipse Charger.  It’s a 3-port USB charger that actually has a place to store excess cords, so they’re hidden and out of the way.  Hallejuiah!  Plus, it comes in a variety of stylish finishes, so you can leave it on your counter and discreetly charge your devices.  Problem solved!

Don’t Let Paper Pile Up

Pottery Barn Mail Organizer

Despite my best intentions at the start of any given week, my counter top is usually cluttered with mail by the week’s end.  Junk mail, catalogs, bills…everything ends up in one big pile that I swear to myself I’ll look at eventually.  I’ve decided to turn over a new leaf and things have been going well so far!  The minute I bring the mail inside, I stop by the trash can and throw out anything I don’t need.  I sort the rest into two piles: things for me to deal with and things for my husband to deal with.  From there, it’s going in this fun galvanized desk organizer from Pottery Barn.  It has two slots to sort papers, plus you can keep random pens, pencils and even iPads all in one place.  I don’t want to take up a ton of space on the counter.  This organizer has a fairly small footprint, so it can easily be tucked into a corner.  This routine has definitely helped me manage the paper clutter in the kitchen, which leaves more counter space open for dirty socks and Legos (thanks kids)!

Get a Handle On Your Lids

Pot lids are another problem for me.  Right now, I just have them all stacked up on a shelf in one of my cabinets.  No rhyme or reason to their organization and, when I start rummaging around for the lid I need, everything falls out of the cabinet.  I actually ended up denting a lid the other day because it fell out of the cabinet…grrrr!  Not surprisingly, The Container Store has plenty of lid solutions!  I may need to invest in this over-the-cabinet pot lid holder.  I love how it makes use of the space on the back of your cabinet door, freeing up more space in the cabinet.  They also have a pull-out version that would be great for cutting boards or sheet pans!

Maximize Drawer Space

As I continued to clean and organize my kitchen, one thing became very clear — in addition to not utilizing cabinet space well, I was also not making the most of my drawer space.  My cutlery and utensils were scattered about, which made it tough to find what I was looking for.  So frustrating!  I invested in several expandable utensil trays like this one from Bed, Bath & Beyond.  I have pretty wide drawers and these trays expand to fit…so you can use every inch of drawer space.  I ended up purchasing a couple of these for my office, too…they’re perfect for organizing supplies!

What are your go-to products or strategies for kitchen organization?  I’d love to know considering I’m only about halfway through my kitchen spring clean!  Tag @Sinkology and @FarmhouseRedefined on Instagram and share what’s working for you.  Happy Organizing, Friends!

How To TRY Your Next Kitchen Sink… Before You BUY!

You’ve watched HGTV for hours, scoured Pinterest boards and endlessly Googled for inspiration, yet you still can’t decide which sink to select for your kitchen update. Endless style options, from traditional to contemporary and luxury to country, leave most homeowners with more questions than not. But there’s so much more to consider than solely style. Follow these three simple steps to find the best sink to suit you and your kitchen.

Step 1: Repeat the mantra “See the sink, be the sink”

How do you see yourself using your sink? Is it a holding ground for dirty dishes? Or is it a spotless rinsing station? If you’re prone to leaving your dishes in the sink for hours…or days…a deeper bowl with natural antimicrobial material like copper or granite will be best for you. The sturdiest sinks, including fireclay, help prevent stains and scratches with long-term durability. Stainless steel is ideal for those looking for a simple solution, while a more luxurious look like cooper will provide a totally different experience. And if you’re a DIY-er, a self-rimming sink is easiest to install with the least risk of a DIY #fail.

For a deeper dive into materials, check out our article on the Top 5 Materials for Kitchen Sinks. In theory, one of these sinks may be right for you, but until you work with your unique space, you won’t know which is best. Regretfully, you can’t try on a sink like a pair of shoes. Which leads us to Step 2…

Step 2: Create your vision

When it comes to kitchen remodels, it can be easier to focus on the cabinetry, appliances, backsplash…really anything but the kitchen sink. This inadvertently pigeonholes homeowners to work within the constraints of newly installed countertops or a hand-me-down faucet. Luckily, there are both online and in-person resources available to help you clearly see how it will all fit together.

If you’re more of an online shopper than department store goer, download the Houzz interior design app from the app store. This free app makes it simple to see thousands of products in your home, and the “View My Home in 3D” feature can make it much easier to visualize your kitchen with a new sink and accessories. Take time to experiment with finishes and bowl types….and have a little fun!

For the less tech-savvy, touchier type, attend a nearby Homearama or walk through your local Ikea. There, you can experience an actual kitchen in real life and compare the size and texture far better than a miniature version on your phone screen. Full disclosure: with countless options at your fingertips, the decision may become more challenging for some.

No matter if you experiment online or in person, capture your inspiration with plenty of photos and record your first impressions. You’ll need it for Step 3…

Step 3: Make your sink dream a reality

When your vision is clear, it’s time to meet with a local kitchen designer for help bringing your design to life. You can expect an expert recommendation fit for your space, budget and taste. National chains like Home Depot and Lowe’s make it easy with in-store appointments alongside their kitchen models. Be sure to search for local specialists who make home visits for the easiest experience.

Stunning Kitchens Require Subtle Details

When planning a kitchen remodel, designers say that the smallest, most understated element can make the most impact. We’ve gathered the top five insider tips to help even low-budget kitchens rival grandiose designs with delicate details.

Tip 1. Coordinate every element

Yes, it sounds obvious, but our first tip is about more than just keeping kitchen appliance finishes and cabinetry color consistent. While our designers do recommend opting for the same appliance shade in any case, considering the display color is equally as important. There’s something faintly displeasing about seeing a green digital clock on a microwave beside blue numbers on a nearby oven.

But remember, we said coordinate, not match. Cabinetry and hardware need not match perfectly, but rather, pair nicely to create an overall balanced look. It’s important to connect your kitchen without being too “matchy matchy.” A range of monochromatic shades and textures can merge to create a harmonious aesthetic. One word of caution: Balance consistency with creativity. For example, choose varying drawer pulls and knobs in the same finish to create coordinated, rather than chaotic, beauty.

Tip 2. Fit snugly

Our experts say that subtle beauty requires seamless design. No matter the material, it’s visually more appealing for the eye to follow an endless line, rather than a jumbled design. Luckily, there are options beyond the standardized shapes and sizes of kitchen materials for personalized alternatives that meet specific remodel needs.

Things like counter-depth fridges and mounted microwaves merge prepping and cooking areas effortlessly with a continuous edge. And like an infinity pool, backsplashes can also form a sleek visual line, whether it expands up to the ceiling or just above the countertop. Simply put: the more connected your kitchen, the grander it will seem. Trust us, you’ll see.

Tip 3. Stow with purpose

First-time kitchen remodelers can make the rookie mistake of designing without function in mind. The kitchen is one of the most used rooms in any home. (Don’t they seem to hold piles of mail, paperwork and keys more than any other?) This excess clutter makes a kitchen feel anything but special.

It’s important to store all your items with intention for accessible kitchen work: dirty sponges and kitchen cleaners belong beneath the kitchen sink, cookbooks close to the stove and knives near the prep space. Speaking of work, make a special home for bulky countertop appliances like coffee makers, toasters and juicers. *Bonus points for a built-in outlet.* You’ll enjoy the cooking convenience while looking like a master chef to guests. Just be sure to place your appliances on your countertop when in use. Even tablets, phones and other electronics, which inevitably make their way to this household hub, can safely store in a hidden plug-ready drawer. Because, let’s admit, we really can’t be anywhere without them.

Tip 4. Soften spotless surfaces

Kitchens come with a blend of sturdy materials to withstand day-to-day tasks. But the combination of solid stones and sleek metals can create an overall cold, unapproachable look. As we mentioned in the previous tip, the kitchen is a high-traffic room. So, it needs to be comfortable enough for everyday use.

Fresh flowers and potted plants bring new life to a kitchen space while pillows, cushions and runners add visible and tangible comfort. We recommend opting for low-maintenance plants and outdoor fabric for minimal upkeep.

Tip 5. Intrigue with a personal touch

Most important of all, subtle beauty comes from each homeowner’s unique vision. It’s the personalized pieces that take DIY remodels to beautifully detailed. For our final tip, keep in mind that less is *definitely* more.

Layers of collected elements on floating shelves, like family mementos, decorative accessories and textiles, give a standout look that’s uniquely yours. If you’re more of a minimalist, make your mark with an upgraded faucet in a modern finish, shape and/or configuration for a high-end look. Unexpected hardware and lighting offers a more haute couture accessory. No matter your design, be sure to keep your personality intact.

In summary, remember to keep it simple when it comes to kitchen design for timeless sophistication with a perfectly understated aesthetic.
